You don’t need to discover the one career you were “meant” to have. You need to design the next version of your working life. In this video I walk through the engineer’s approach I used to get from 35 years of consulting engineering to writing novels in Lisbon.
The six steps
- Separate defaults from desires: what you actually want, not what you were taught to want
- Find your career clues: patterns in your energy, strengths, curiosity and environment
- Define your design criteria: your basis of design for the rest of your life
- Create three possible futures: three different designs, scored against your criteria
- Test before you leap: small, cheap experiments that replace assumptions with evidence
- Build your transition path: a bridge you can build one section at a time
